Article Writing Tips – How To Make Your Article More Readable

There’s an old sales maxim that says: “Tell ‘em what you’re going to tell ‘em, then tell ‘em, and then tell ‘em what you told ‘em.” For years, that’s been a successful selling formula in the business word, but it’s also one of the best article writing tips you can get.

A good article works just like that. There’s an intro, or some call it a “hook”, that tells the reader what they’re going to be told. There’s the body of the article, which tells them, and there’s a conclusion, which tells them what they were told.

Of the three, learning to create a good hook is probably the most important dynamic of a good article. It sets the stage. It has the effect of grabbing the reader’s attention, framing their attention in a particular way, and then pulling them, through their curiosity, into your article or story. The more provocative the hook, the better it grabs. A good hook will get your reader to ask themselves “What’s that about?” and then read further to find out. Often, in business writing, a good hook begins with a startling fact or an age-old myth. For example, “Business bought 200 million internet routers last year…” begs the question of “why?” Read on to find out. The hook of “Gordon Moore once said that ‘the number of transistors in a circuit will double every year’…” is a great setup to either saying why that’s wrong or why it’s still true!

So add the concept of making sure there’s a great hook to your library of good article writing tips. If you do, then you can shorten that old sales maxim to say: “Hook ‘em, then reel them in!”
